Announcement and Call for Papers
The Tenth International Conference on Structural Engineering, Mechanics and Computation (SEMC 2028) will be held in Cape Town, South Africa, from 2 to 4 September 2028. In the tradition of previous SEMC conferences (the first of which was held in 2001), SEMC 2028 will bring together from around the world academics, researchers and practitioners in the broad fields of structural mechanics, associated computation and structural engineering, to review recent achievements in the advancement of knowledge and understanding in these areas, share the latest developments, and address the challenges that the present and the future pose. As the tenth event in the series, SEMC 2028 will have special significance.
The Organisers of SEMC 2028 are inviting contributions from all prospective authors. Abstracts of 200 to 300 words should be submitted in the first instance. Full papers will only be required later. Proposals for the organisation of Special Sessions are also welcome. Details may be seen via the appropriate links on the menu.
Introduction
The first of the International Conferences on Structural Engineering, Mechanics and Computation (SEMC) was held in Cape Town (South Africa) in 2001. This event was a great success, and has been followed by eight other equally successful conferences in 2004, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2025.
The Tenth International Conference on Structural Engineering, Mechanics and Computation (SEMC 2028) will be held in Cape Town from 4 to 6 September 2028. Cape Town is a beautiful, modern and culturally diverse city situated close to the southern tip of the African continent, and easily accessible from all parts of the world. A leading tourist destination, Cape Town is South Africa’s oldest city, and has successfully hosted many international conventions, festivals and sporting events over the years.
To date, the SEMC conferences have been collectively attended by nearly 3,000 researchers representing over 60 countries worldwide. In total, about 2,750 peer-reviewed papers have been published across the nine Proceedings books, and indexed in SCOPUS. The first edition of the Proceedings was published by Elsevier, and subsequent editions have been published by CRC Press/Taylor & Francis.
The next conference, SEMC 2028, will be expected to attract more than 500 participants from all over the world. It is hoped that a good number of young and upcoming researchers will be able to join the many distinguished and well-established academics and practitioners who will be attending the conference and leading the discussions.
Aims
In the tradition of the previous conferences, SEMC 2028 will aim at bringing together from around the world academics, researchers and practitioners in the broad fields of structural mechanics, associated computation and structural engineering, to review recent achievements in the advancement of knowledge and understanding in these areas, share the latest developments, and address the challenges that the present and the future pose. As the 10th event in the series, this edition of SEMC will have added significance as a forum for reflecting on progress since the inaugural conference in 2001, and for identifying priority areas of research going forward.
The anticipated cross fertilisation between theory and practice will be expected to promote a better understanding of material and structural behaviour, and enhance structural engineering practice in the civil, architectural, mechanical, manufacturing, marine and aerospace engineering disciplines, among others.
